READ THE LABELS.  Newsletter from April 2010. by Dr David S. Dyer

I have often mentioned to my friends that if I can get my patients to read the labels of the foods they are buying and eating I have accomplished a great deal towards helping them be healthier.
 
      Just think about it, when you are at your local grocery store and filling your basket. What are you really putting in your basket to take home with you? Is it real food or just a mixture of chemicals that some marketing company wants you to think is food. How many of you actually believe that mashed potatoes in a box can really be good for you? Vitamins, enzymes and minerals are fairly delicate.By the time those potatoes have been peeled, cooked, dehydrated, preserved, boxed and set on the shelf for a couple of months there are no natural nutrients left in them. But they add vitamins you say!!! If you really believe these added nutrients are as good for you as the real thing then the old saying is " I have a bridge I would like to sell you." The truth is that they have side effects that are negative to your health and well being, this also applies to foods in cans. I know it might be easier but that doesn't make it good for you!!!
 
       Have you ever been to a facility that manufactures food products? I have been to several and I have never liked what I have seen. The way ingredients are added and the cleaning of the equipment are all questionable as to the benefits of your health. Now add all those chemicals that most of us can not even pronounce and you have a concoction some call food that the body does not know what to do with. As a result your body will end up storing much of these chemicals and causing you to become fat. I know you didn't want to hear that but it is really what happens. I have had more than one undertaker tell me that people's bodies do not decompose like they use to. Could this be because of all the preservatives in the food system that the general public is consuming? Many health professionals believe it is, including myself.
 
        Now there is another HUGE PROBLEM, it seems that we can't even believe what is on the label. A recent article from the Washington Post demonstrates the dangers of believing food manufactures and processors labels and how it can affect your health. It seems that the FDA is cracking down on companies that falsely label products. From fake caviar, moldy tomato paste, watered down honey and fish that are not the species they are supposed to be. Now, most of you know that the FDA is not the most reliable and efficient organization under the federal umbrella of government organizations. What this means is that there is a lot more of it going on than anyone knows about. The truth is that it will get worse in the future as the masses demand more and more food. The food manufactures and processors will rush to meet these demands the best they can and your health will not be their concern. If you think I sound negative please understand that I am being realistic, not negative.
 
      How can you save yourself and your family? Eat as close to natural as you can and be sure to make that organic as often as you can. Buying fresh from farmers in your area accomplishes several things. It gets you fresh farm raised food, helps the local economy and it supports your local farming community so you will have fresh foods in the future.
 
       My desire and intent with this information is that it will help you and your family be healthier so you don't have to worry about the swine flu or any other illness that our sick system wants to frighten you with.
